Spotlight: Shirley Zhong

We recently sat down with Shirley Zhong, one of the newest members of our sales team, to learn more about her background and what brought her to our office.
Although she joined us in April, Shirley is far from new to real estate—with over 18 years of experience in the New Zealand property market, including high-performing development projects. Now based in Sunnybank Hills, she’s excited to bring her expertise, multilingual skills, and client-focused approach to our vibrant Brisbane community. What’s it like working in sales?
Dynamic and deeply rewarding. No two days are the same—whether it’s negotiating a complex deal, guiding a nervous first-home buyer, or celebrating a successful settlement. The key is blending hustle with heart: being proactive but also patient, strategic but empathetic. It’s not just about transactions; it’s about building trust and turning goals into reality.
What do you feel is the difference you offer to clients?
Three things: expertise, empathy, and execution.
My 18-year track record, multilingual skills, and development project experience give clients confidence. But I also listen closely to their unique needs—whether it’s a family downsizing or an investor expanding their portfolio—and tailor my approach. Finally, I don’t just promise results; I deliver them through strategic marketing, relentless negotiation, and a vast network.
What are your favourite things about the areas you service?
Sunnybank and Sunnybank Hills are a vibrant, multicultural hub—especially for Asian communities, which I connect with seamlessly thanks to my fluency in Mandarin and Cantonese. The area offers fantastic amenities, top schools, and a strong sense of community. It’s a privilege to help buyers and sellers navigate such a sought-after location!
How have you utilised your previous career history, skills, and knowledge in your current role?
My years in New Zealand real estate taught me the art of adapting to market shifts and client priorities. Now, I leverage that insight to price properties competitively, identify off-market opportunities, and negotiate win-win outcomes. My development project experience also helps me advise investors and developers with a big-picture perspective.
What are some major things you’ve learnt since starting here?
The power of teamwork! LJ Hooker’s collaborative environment has shown me how shared knowledge lifts everyone’s success. I’ve also deepened my understanding of Brisbane’s micro-markets—like how local infrastructure projects or demographic trends impact buyer demand—which helps me advise clients with precision.
What are your goals for the future?
To keep growing as a trusted advisor who helps buyers and sellers achieve their property dreams. Long-term, I aim to build a standout brand in Sunnybank and Sunnybank Hills—known not just for sales, but for education, transparency, and community impact. Success, to me, is measured by client referrals and repeat business!
What advice do you have for others wanting to pursue a career in real estate/sales?
Be prepared to work hard, stay consistent, and play the long game. This industry rewards resilience and relationships—not quick wins. Invest in learning, lean on mentors, and always put clients’ needs ahead of commissions. And remember: every ‘no’ brings you closer to a ‘yes.’
